As social media has gained social and political importance, researchers understandably have gravitated towards studying media that influences large audiences. But what might we learn by studying the long tail of social media, the quotidian internet? Using a novel method to sample random videos from YouTube and TikTok, we are discovering that uses for online video are much broader than we might guess from studies of influencer culture. In particular, we see different patterns of video creation when we contrast quotidian video created by authors in different nations and languages. Such studies require mixed methods, teams with language and cultural expertise and raise complex ethical issues - what questions about how video is produced and used merit this in-depth exploration?
