DENIM - Frequently Asked Questions
- I got the blue screen of death, and my Windows 2000/XP computer restarted. What should I do?
We've heard of this occurring on a small subset of machines. It seems to be an interaction between Java 1.4.1_01 and some display drivers, related to Java's use of Windows' DirectDraw and Direct3D libraries. We believe this is fixed in Java 1.4.1_02, which is the recommended version and is included with the DENIM downloads. The best fix is probably to install Java version 1.4.1_02. You might also try updating your video drivers.
As a workaround or quick test, you can try DENIM in Safe Mode, which will disable use of DirectDraw and Direct3D, by clicking on the DENIM Safe Mode icon in Start Menu->DENIM.
For the full gory technical details, see Java 1.4.1 release notes on Sun's web site. In particular, bug #4749817 can cause system "blue screen death", particularly on ATI adapters.
- On the Macintosh, DENIM crashed at startup, giving a java.lang.NullPointerException related to sun.java2d.SunGraphicsEnvironment.getAvailableFontFamilyNames . What should I do?
Based on messages from the Apple java-dev mailing archive, a lot of people who use Java 1.4.1 on the Mac have experienced similar problems. Someone suggested this had to do with bitmap fonts in a Classic install in "/System Folder/Fonts," and that renaming it to something else, like "/System Folder/Fonts.not", and rebooting your machine solves the problem.
- DENIM is slow on my computer. Is there anything I can do to speed up performance?
You can try turning the Radar View off. Open the Pie Menu and go to View->Radar View.
- Part of my design has disappeared or has been rendered only partially. Is there anything I can do?
You can try causing the screen to refresh, by zooming or panning it a little. If the problem is a transient rendering glitch, it may go away. If that doesn't work, try saving and re-loading your design.
- I've exported my DENIM design to HTML, but there is a thick black edge around the outside of the page. What is causing this?
When saving a DENIM design into HTML, DENIM exports a DENIM page as an image map. The algorithm we currently use for making GIF images wrongly produces black edges when quantizing an image to 256 colors. It will be fixed in the next major release (target date of June).
